june morefocus / LIVE concert

Saturday 28 June, 2pm
Glen Waverley Uniting Church, cnr Bogong Ave and Kingsway, Glen Waverley (Mel Ref 71 C3)

This is going to be huge - a concert with hundreds of people to record the official NCYC09 Music Album - LIVE!! Learn the music, listen to the lyrics, then mix it up with the artists and audience to create the live music album and video experience. And it’s a pretty good taster of what you’ll get at NCYC09 as well!

From 2pm, we’ll be learning all the great new NCYC09 worship songs - the tune, the words, harmonies, and getting to know the band.

We’ll have a break for dinner, then the lights go down, the band warms up, and we hit the record button… This is the first time NCYC has ever produced a live concert album, and it’s your chance to be on it!

This is an NCYC gig, so we’d love to see as many of you as possible. If you’re travelling down to Melbourne, give Merryn in the Youth Ministry office a call if we need to find you a place to stay overnight.

Download the poster here, or as always, send us an email if you want to know more.

For those of you who don’t want to head home so late, there is space for you to bunk down in the church hall - but let us know if you’re going to do that! Some of our friends at the Kombri Krew will even do breakfast on Sunday morning before you head home (or go to Easter Camp!)

Back in ‘08

After a huge 2007 at Brunswick, Frankston, Hoppers Crossing churches, and a last hurrah for the year at CTM, moreFocus is back in 2008 - and it’s going to be big!

First things first: lots of folk have told us that having moreFocus on a Saturday would be so much better, so people from regional Victas can come down, or vice-versa. So this year, all moreFocus services and workshops will be held on the Saturday before the 5th Sunday of the month. In any case, here are the dates…

29 March - Ballarat
We’re kicking off moreFocus ‘08 out in the regions! Ballarat is also where the Synod Easter camp is going to be held, so you can come up for moreFocus and stay for the camp!

28 June - Glen Waverley
This is going to be exciting - in case you didn’t know, NCYC09 is being held in Melbourne in 2009, and so at this moreFocus, we’re going to be recording the official NCYC09 Music Album - live!

30 August - Geelong
Heading down the ol’ Princes Highway, Geelong will host August moreFocus. They’re mad keen, and so are we.

30 November - Nearly NCYC
By this stage, NCYC09 will be just over a month away. This is going to be best time to get yourself hyped, psyched and excited, and get geared up for our synod to host the 2000 delegates heading to Melbourne.

More details on all of these moreFocus’s will be posted online as they come to hand, so keep checking back for updates. And as always, if you have any questions or comments, feel free to post here, or email uym@ctm.uca.edu.au

Saturday 29 December, 5pm

Centre for Theology + Ministry, 1 Morrison Close, Parkville

That’s right, we’re planning away for our finalo moreFocus of the year. And seeing as though you’ve all done such a great job putting on events this year, the moreFocus team is organising this gig for you! (Think of it as a late Christmas present…)

There have been some important changes: Unfortunately our original plans to have an overnighter and a session at the Juvenile Justice Centre didn’t quite work out. So this time around we won’t be doing a JustAct workshop, but they’ll start again in 2008. But for the final moerFocus of 2007, here’s what we have in mind:

Worship will start from 5pm at the Centre for Theology + Ministry, and our guest speaker is Natalie Dixon-Manu (all the way from Tasmania). The awesome youth band from St Albans UC will lead the music, and as promised, the moreFocus team will do the worship.

Dinner in the form of a barbeque will follow dinner - $5 per person, so we can cover some costs. (It’ll be good practise for Australia’s Biggest BBQ next year…)

Have a relaxing and meaningful Christmas, and we really look forward to seeing you at moreFocus!

Sunday 30 September - Hoppers Crossing Uniting Church
225 Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing (mel ref 202 E12)

That’s right, we’re coming up to another 5th Sunday, and we’re heading west (depending on your perspective) out to Hoppers Crossing. Everyone’s getting a bit exciting, especially the youthies out at Werribee and Hoppers, who are jointly organising moreFocus #3.

So this time, focus and worship have the theme (drum roll please)
Limiting Choice as Punishment – Victorian’s Prison System
In Victoria, there are 13 adult prisons and 3 youth justice custodial centres, which take ages between 10-18yrs. There are nearly 4,000 adults incarcerated in Victoria and over half have previously been in prison. A person in prison has broken the law. However the prison system raises many questions about the role incarceration plays to reconciliation, forgiveness and rehabilitation in our society. Through hearing first hand accounts, simulating the daily schedule of prisoners, and discussion we will explore these issues, and where faith and God fits in to the picture.

This interactive workshop will be run by Uniting Church prison chaplains, Jenny Hayes and Greg Crowe, sharing their experience and thoughts about Victoria’s prison system, as well as taking participants through the experience of what ‘being in jail’ actually means. Following the workshop will also be an opportunity for you to get further involved.

Sunday 29 July - Frankston Uniting Church

16 High Street, FrankstonMelways Reference 100A A9So what can you expect from moreFocus #2?Well, the focus time from 2pm is looking at homelessness and poverty. Some of the folk from Frankston will show you around the breakfast kitchen they run for the local community.

The workshop will then have some people from JustAct runing simulation games, activities and training in organising a protest action.

What then?Dinner! Frankston UC are firing up the barbeque and putting on food for everyone there (ps, it might be helpful to let us know if you’ll be there, so there are enough sausages and veggie burgers to go round!) This is usually when you catch up with all your mates from NCYC, easter camps, and of course, the last moreFocus!

The night will finish off with the grand finale: worship at Frankston Uniting Church, run by the locals. This is the place to be to worship with a couple of hundred other people - great music, speakers and a vibe you can’t get anywhere else…

And here’s a picture… because this is now the previous moreFocus…
